Walter L. Johnson Opportunities for Excellence

Walter L. Johnson received his doctorate from Duke University and then became a professor of economics at Mizzou in 1965. It is estimated that Johnson taught introductory economics to more than 40,000 students during his 33 years at MU. He received the MUAA Faculty Award in 1968 and participated in Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Kappa Psi, and the prestigious QEBH honor society. After a long and successful career, Johnson retired in 1998 and was awarded the distinguished title of professor emeritus.

Your generous gift to the Walter L. Johnson Opportunities for Excellence Fund will honor his many years of lively teaching and service to the department. This fund provides resources for scholarships, program support, faculty development, and more. The Economics Development Gifts Fund

The Economics Development Gifts Fund provides support for the research and teaching missions of the department. The fund also gives the chair flexibility to address other urgent needs and take advantage of unexpected opportunities that arise within the department throughout the year.

Current initiatives include:

  • Summer Research Fellowships for Faculty and Students
  • Undergraduate Student Groups (Women in Economics & the Economics Society)
  • Conference Support for Graduate Students
  • EPARC Policy Research (e.g., Economic Literacy Project)

Gifts from alumni and friends like you play an essential role in the day-to-day operations of the department as well as the long-term success of the program. Economics Leaders Board Opportunity Fund

The Economics Leaders Board is made up of 15 dedicated alumni who volunteer their time and talent to promote the department, further the department's research and teaching missions, and assist with alumni relations and fundraising. The Opportunity Fund was established to provide unrestricted support to the department and ensure its ongoing success.

Through your gift to the Economics Leaders Board Opportunity Fund, you will provide the board members and the chair with the flexibility they need to address unexpected opportunities, enhance the learning environment, support research, recruit and retain top faculty, and more.  Currently, the Department uses these funds to support merit-based awards for freshman and sophomores majoring in Economics.
