Omicron Delta Epsilon’s Beta Chapter of Missouri (MU-ODE) hosted Economics Professor Dr. Nicolas Ziebarth on Friday, October 24, for an engaging discussion on the Great Depression. Students gathered to enjoy free Jimmy John’s as Dr. Ziebarth contextualized the severity of the Great Depression beyond what most textbooks convey. He illustrated how devastating the economic collapse was for households, labor markets, and the banking system, and demonstrated how differences in policy between two demographically similar regions can produce wide variations in economic outcomes. Dr. Ziebarth offered valuable historical insights that connected past economic crises to modern-day challenges such as the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. Attendees also had the opportunity to ask questions, deepen their understanding of the historical event, and connect with one another.
