It is with deep sadness that we remember Dr. Donald Schilling, a respected economist, dedicated educator, cherished colleague, and valued member of the University of Missouri community.

For decades, Don devoted his professional life to the study and teaching of economics. As a faculty member in the Department of Economics at the University of Missouri, where he taught courses such as Money & Banking, he inspired countless students through his commitment to learning, critical thinking, and academic excellence. His passion for economics was matched by his dedication to helping students develop the knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in their careers and lives.

Beyond the classroom, Don was recognized for his service to the economics profession. He was an active member of the Missouri Valley Economics Association and served as Director of Undergraduate Studies. His colleagues remember him not only for his intellect and professionalism, but also for his kindness, humility, and generosity in helping others.

Shawn Ni reflected:

"What I remember most about him were his wisdom and his positive outlook on both work and life. He genuinely enjoyed teaching and serving as Director of Undergraduate Studies, and his enthusiasm for helping students was evident to everyone around him.

Don was always generous with his time, especially when junior faculty sought his advice. On many occasions, I turned to him when facing difficult situations in teaching or in life. His wisdom, practical judgment, and infectious optimism were a constant source of comfort and guidance. He had a remarkable ability to help others see a path forward and to make challenges seem more manageable."

Don's interests extended far beyond academia. He was a talented musician, avid hunter, thoughtful and successful investor, and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be remembered for the lives he touched through his teaching, mentorship, friendship, and service. His legacy lives on in the students he guided, the colleagues he supported, and the family he loved.

The University of Missouri Department of Economics joins family, friends, former students, and colleagues in celebrating the life and contributions of Donald Schilling. His wisdom, warmth, and dedication will be greatly missed, but his impact will endure for generations to come.
