Professor Milyo on campaign finance and American democracy
MU Economics
The Institute for Free Speech invited Dr. Jeff Milyo to contribute to a series commemorating the 50th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision in Buckley v Valeo. The 1976 Buckley establishes the parameters for the government’s interest in regulating money in politics: prevention of the “actuality and appearance of corruption.” In “American Democracy and the Actuality of Corruption,” Milyo discusses the Court’s conception of corruption and its relationship to political economic theory. In a complementary essay, “Buckley and the Appearance of Corruption Standard,” Dr. David Primo, relates several lessons from his University of Chicago Press book (co-authored with Milyo) on the empirical research regarding the appearance of corruption. The full collection of essays by leading legal experts and scholars is available here.
