A Study of Teacher Working Conditions Before and After the Pandemic

MU Economics
Cory Koedel

In a new article via Brookings Institution, PhD student Sofia Baker and Professor Cory Koedel discuss their research on declining teacher working conditions. Baker and Koedel find that teacher working conditions declined with the onset of the COVID pandemic and continued to decline even after schools returned to normal operations. The largest decline occurred after the pandemic. This pattern suggests that a post-pandemic “bounce back” may not materialize absent intervention. The Brookings article describes their findings, explains how they fit in with other related evidence on teacher working conditions, and discusses why this issue is so important.
